In order to design city scapes we need to understand that with today's population, the present resource distribution scenarios and the infrastructure configurations, the global population's life support system is in retrograde. With all arable land already stressed and three new people a second coming to dinner, doing nothing is not an moral option.
With steady increases in manufacturing productivity, job shift complicated by manipulated mass migrations to cities and population increases , many areas on the planet are facing seventy percent unemployment _ destiny deprivation. Consequently we are left with a global civilization near terminal nihilism with usury driven cultural genocide at it's roots. With education and the media in the control of the status quo the global population hasn't a clue besides nihilism _ no accomplishment, no appreciation, no hope. The glue that terra forms cities for the most part is debt and taxation by manipulated assessment _ raising the value of the surrounding land scam. Rousting people with informal economies from self sufficient life support strategies to captive consumers in places of mandatory consumption and mandatory non production is simply the beginning. The even more insidious use of taxation as a hidden agenda, is not only the wealth-fare infrastructures paid for by the majority to benefit a small minority but government complicity by requiring currency or a money economy to pay the taxes. Separating the population from the food chain plays to a work for food scenario also requiring a money economy. This leaves the majority working for the minority as wage slaves to pay debt, taxes and buy food. This coupled with the fear of job loss discourages most from demanding reform as the bouts with union organizing have demonstrated in the past.

This was the strategy for gathering the slave labor since the industrial revolution and to kill the informal economies thus institutionalizing codependency on a supply side merchant system of life support. In other words the predator class schooled in the manipulation of the straw man(money) were more successful in gathering the TIME of the citizens with their little game of Monopoly in a captive consumer setting, the city. This robbed millions of entrepreneurs of their potential and made self sufficiency almost impossible _ destiny deprivation.
Put another way today's cities are a place designed simply as milking parlors for cash cows with the life blood of the captive consumers going to organized usury as in a banana republic _ somewhere else. Most were planned that way all turned out that way.
After centuries of cultural genocide the majority of the population is now hopelessly trapped in cities because land is scarce. The artificial scarcity land-scam is exacerbated on a global level because millions of acres are tied up in the dairy and the red meat diet. As an example in the US almost five acres out of the seven acres needed for provisioning out of a divisible nine acres per person goes to cattle as well as two thirds of the grain crop. Beyond their shady beginnings, cities have turned into sale of information centers providing services to the parasitic class. And where transportation is approaching nearly half the economy and as much of the job market, it borders on the ridiculous. Cities today are paper shuffling, information flacking, non producing, net importers, contributing little quality to the real job at hand _ the empowerment of our progeny.
The flack or deception management is CHAOS(Conservative Hype Always Optimally Skewed) where the milking parlor starts and destiny control in the hands of the citizen leaves off. 'Conservative' being double speak for 'organized usury' in sheep's clothing.
It is hype and a merchant mentality morphed into organized usury(later day pirates) that has created a material world. Artists like Madonna who have been attempting to expose in song and flick this senseless materialism, mimetic desire and the arrogance of ingestion control through designer sin in a captive consumer society are being persecuted same as in the union efforts. Our so-called culture is a display of opulence and conspicuous consumption and benefits the smallest percent of the global population _ citizen cults worshipping a straw man(money) whose life's goals are to win at someone else's game of monopoly. This exercise in nihilism is tantamount to civilization chasing it's tail. Beam me up Scotty.
Some ask is all this rape necessary? Well for predatory supply side commerce it is. For self sufficiency and the redistribution of TIME economic Darwinism has been a disaster. Ninety five percent of the global population is suffering from destiny deprivation so five percent can profit from the provisioning of supply side life support _ the Hegemony of Predation - Parasitism. The main goal in life for most people and the reason for their being, is progeny. The majority of people live to create a family and how that is done is basically im-material. In a city the supply side hard-liner(sucker born every minute, let them eat cake, I am not a " crook " crowd) sees you as the breeders of wage slaves, milk-able consumers, marks , targets etc.. In other words people are fodder for an economy in third party hands, rather than the other way around.
In a new age C21 village-support group or small city the raison d’etre is to provide a support group for the inhabitants not a milking parlor for cash cows _ an economy or life support environment for people rather than the way it is. In other words "From what is to what ought"
In a support group strategy the citizens deploy their TIME for the benefit of their own families and to benefit the immediate support group. A hundred families amounting to five hundred people or so can interact efficiently with high tech living strategies (not now being employed by sinister design), to provide full employment on the land they live on rather than five separate areas or cities we now use in surrogate provisioning. Groups of villages to accommodate expanding families can grow into small cities or bioregions to take advantage of pooled resources for public works, and transit-utilities rights of ways _ operating strategies to become the global village.

Well let me cut the diatribe short before I time out your download. So to city design. During WW2 I grew up in Worcester Massachusetts a city of one hundred fifty thousand (Abbie Hoffman was a neighbor). When I was a kid the produce was grown just outside the city and brought in on horse drawn wagons and trucks. Besides the farmer grown produce and meat almost everybody had a lot large enough to have a garden and canned the harvest. Neighbors traded their surpluses for what they needed etc.
NOTE: There is enough lawn area in the U.S. fully manned, watered, fertilized, and harvested to feed half the population of the country on a vegan diet. See LAND DISTRIBUTION
Manufacturing was the mainstay for wealth where we put out the highest gross for any city in the world without a harbor. We had a tradition of worker and family owned businesses even for heavy industry.
This almost ideal city scape was destroyed after the war by the trade thing. When we insist on global marketing we eventually disrupt the local employ and both sides loose _ careers of the entrepreneurial types as well as wage jobs. Manufacturing shit the bit because of a series of hostile takeovers, market dumping, and industry in other areas was moved off shore to intimidate lower wages and to manipulate other populations into the same dead end cycle. In essence we lost our culture because others(organized usury) decided it was their God given right to profiteer and we could not do anything about it due to a flaw in our constitution-bill of rights, the lack of economic democracy.
This disruption is cultural genocide. It broke up the support group, village within a city, neighborhood bonds, ending the informal economy as people moved away and lost their homes through foreclosure. Losing barter partners dismantled the informal economy and the cost of living shot up _ captive consumers forced to buy everything at full price profit attached, cant get it any where else at any price except from frankencorp with the proceeds-dividends going to stockholders rather than neighbors.
The local farmers who grew the produce without irrigation were driven out of business by the subsidized irrigation of cartel farms and commodities exchange manipulations. Many of the remaining farmers have been forced to sell to developers who make land available to the affluent. Manipulative zoning and small lots insures mandatory consumption and mandatory non production while the farms disappear for good, creating a codependency on the supply side and the means of production permanently out of our realm. Go figure.
So how do we lay out a city that won't die?
If families are organized in small village cottage industry concept, the infrastructure becomes localized rather than sprawled out over five cities to provision one group with the means of production in third party hands. In our city we had neighborhoods where we bartered for up to two thirds of our everyday needs, even traded baby clothes etc. This informal economy re-innovation will drastically reduce the need for large incomes, elaborate transportation schemes etc.. The drastically reduced municipal needs provides the tax relief to further reduce the need for currency exchange. The end product of these strategies is emancipation and the empowerment of your progeny through sustainability. People before profit.
As part of our research strategy and to foster development on a social engineering level we worked on a TV program called the Waltons which produced training videos for three generations under one roof co-housing and low impact village-support group interdependence translated into many languages and seen globally.
The hybrid of this or what is possible right now, is a village complex of self sufficient families tied together with a Wireless village Intranet(continuous electronic town meeting) where the workplace is the living place as well as the food place. Consequently the transport place can be reduced, the market place can be a local barter affair over the intranet for goods and services locally produced, the workplace city and schooling cities with all the cyclical building and infrastructure abandonment can be struck along with the need for transportation as we know it. If the food chain is produced by the village families on their own acre or so, the farm place can be living place. If we alter our diet to eliminate red meat and dairy we can release almost half of the land in the country to potential self sufficient living space. These simple life style modifications in just the US would free up enough land to give every family on the planet an acre or so of production land(1,000,000,000 acres or so). These 'live simply so others can simply live' strategies are a moot point when considered on a global scale. Well over twice the global population could fit in the lower forty eight with a more fulfilling standard of living than the Waltons enjoyed. So much for population explosion, land, resource distribution and planet sustain-ability.
That having been said, this scenario in turn is what we can share with the two thirds undeveloped world where hype(CHAOS) has increased the demand for material-ism. The Walton scenario has been translated around the globe and accepted as an achievable model for a light footprint alternative to a forced supply side codependency. In other words the redistribution of TIME rather than wealth has been seen and evaluated by a majority of the planet's citizens through a global media experience. We as a civilization have a workable technology synergism to provide a life support strategy with the means of production in the hands of the citizen and individual families exceeding the standard of living that the Waltons enjoyed. Question is: What are you doing to keep this from happening? That is, besides naively reciting better living through parasitism mantras.
One of the most costly things cities are saddled with is infrastructure. Utilities(water, sewer, electricity, heating fuel, motor fuel, sanitary) roads, mass transit, public safety, munestate etc. in other words your common-wealth investment. This becomes debt owned by organized usury who have been greedily hoarding your TIME credits _ ripping off your watch and selling you back the TIME as tax free muni bonds.
In our present cities and any others we
might build, we can start with the Solar Hydrogen Economy to provide
not only the energy but the utilities as well. This is where we

NOTE: The Solar Hydrogen Economy in Canada is a done deal with the Hydro power from James Bay, well almost. Germany has already made the decision to go with Hydrogen and are as we speak attempting to tie up as much juice as they can from James bay. They are even considering investing in the next phase which is a disaster in the making. But Iceland is closer with a bunch of water power and will probably be the low bidder. Transportation is minimal in the new layout due to our high tech non supply side life support strategies. When village lots (self sufficient production space) are laid out concentrically with the muni-estate in the center everything gets logical. As the parcels are occupied in sequence, utility and road extensions or drive-ways can be installed and maintained as part of the landscaping of your one acre or so production site, not a muni-money thing. The need for personal transport is reduced by the work at home as well as home schooling and over the fence Intranet marketing. The movement of life support is through the tube, over the fence and down the path type of activity for almost two thirds of the goods and services needed for every day family life. The mass transit approach is only needed between villages or neighborhoods especially for the heavy stuff. In Europe the car-truck train is popular. All this stuff exists now in bits and pieces. When enough of us wise up, we can create world standards with the parts and it will be feasible and affordable to cottage industry produce them. In other words the market, technology rededication and cottage industry component manufacture will become one _ a city scape with all this built in.
For the sake of sustainability we need villages and combinations of villages with Mondragon style enterprise which will feature the Walton work at home(cottage industry) grow your own food and where the young come to the old to learn and the old come to the young to learn with electronic schooling, virtual government and entertainment all guaranteed as a birthright. So how do we get all this in perspective? How can we get a collection of small independent groups to now function as a city state and then a global village?
It begins with the need. To make the empowerment of our progeny job one, we have to design life support for a planet full of people around a non invasive strategy. In other words a safe place where slavery can't ever prevail again in any form, wage slave or otherwise. Well forget the rocket science even though we had real rocket scientists in our think tank and some of the thinking here is from the space program. When we can establish the technology(Mike Mulligans space Shuttle in the basement) enabling a family of five to feed and shelter on the same acre they live on as well as the technology to work and school at home, we have eliminated what is wrong with civilization as we know it or were brainwashed to accept.
NOTE: The moon shot was the cover for the hidden agenda of bankrolling the Solar Hydrogen Economy research with common-wealth. It is one of the main reasons that so many talented people devoted their time to it. And as a thank you many careers were ruined when Stooge Nixon decided to scuttle the technology in favor of his mentors.
That giant step for mankind accelerated some of the vital technology to live almost anywhere we want. It also gives us the potential to eliminate the five city system to provision any one group. That having been said we can allow an acre of so per family in our grand design insofar as we have saved thirty four acres per family by our high low tech back to the future life support strategies. Every family on earth with a production acre would entail a land mass of less than half the U.S. lower forty eight to feed and house today's population and the full landmass of the US lower forty eight could house and feed over double the Earth's present population at five people to an acre.
In other words at present global population we would be looking at ten million, hundred acre or so self sufficient subdivisions. There are at present (old USDA figures)over three million farms and ranches in the US averaging six hundred acres with the largest devoting their crops and pasture to feeding cattle.
To put this in local perspective the entire population of the US with a self sufficient acre or so for every family of five could feed and house themselves easily in a landmass the size of Nevada(110,540 sq. mi. or 70,000,000 acres) on fifty million acres in five hundred thousand, one hundred acre or so sovereign subdivisions, villages , support groups, voting cells etc. with room left over for fudge and population increases, no. This allows several variations on a theme. If we take co-housing to the Danish mode where several families live Walton style, a cluster approach to the architecture presents itself. In other words a shelter space and the food and cottage industry production space(an acre or so per family) surrounds it.
The stand alone structure with three generations under one roof on an
acre(Walton style) is ideal for many reasons mentioned in our web site and enables the simple extension of roads and utilities.
The city that already exists retrofitted to take advantage of as many of these innovations as possible. Retrofitting present structure stock and consolidating the utilities with the Solar Hydrogen Economy frees up the TIME, creating the funding to make all this happen.
A combination of small villages becoming part of a greater city state to share the common-wealth costs of mass transit and rights of way for the main utilities(amenity infrastructure) and the Hydrogen economy.

Our lowest common denominator building strategy is a vaulted dome made from concrete poured over a pile of dirt. This can also be done with dry stone, brick etc., or clay you can fire in place. To give you a glimpse of how far we took all this, our project premise was to design a living unit that would provide the food chain inside the biosphere and would function anywhere within four hundred million miles from a class nine sun _ living on the asteroid belt. It is amazing what we came up with, especially in the food chain end of it. Terra forming the belt and transporting it all up there with solar sails is another research exercise(some other time)
As a contractor and consultant I can give you an idea what things cost and substitute new age materials and systems. We can also discuss how to build it yourself and break it down to bucks a foot as these discussions progress.
Today a stick built house costs forty five dollars a square foot on (average US Canada) conventional materials and labor as opposed to the concrete biosphere home estimate of twenty dollars a square foot, no maintenance and it heats itself.
A stress panel system made out of PET(recycled plastic bottles)where one all purpose two by eight panel will be the support beams on edge, walls and floors as well as the roof, as is without roofing materials. That will probably come in around twenty five a foot when we get it mass produced.
Net Mine the flotsam plastic in the pacific and press it into panels aboard the fishing factory ships and form them into barges and tow them where they are needed. Put sails on the barges and remote sail them to Haiti with GPS controls etc...
Another project is to put the reactants into a roll up mat or an origami puzzle. When RF Radio Frequencies are connected to the built in antenna the reactions would take place expanding the contents into a unit _ could be an automobile, house, machine parts, furniture etc..
Utilities run twenty to thirty dollars a lineal foot (no water or ledge in hole) for each utility up to eight inch pipes and normal electric infrastructure buried, transformers and substations extra.
Roads _ a typical twenty four foot subdivision two coat asphalt road with California curbs(beveled asphalt) and sidewalks are a hundred dollars a lineal foot roughly, depending on the soil moved to bring it to grade etc. add the water, gas, electric, sewer, and drainage pipes and you are up to three hundred fifty a foot making a small five lot subdivision layout with a five hundred foot road go for two hundred thousand with the hydrants, catch basins, manholes, laterals etc. with permits, bonds and fudge etc.. There are road as well as utility alternatives.
So much for utilities, with one pipe for Hydrogen I can eliminate the utilities and muni services(water, gas, electric, motor fuel, sewerage, garbage and trash collection) by burying a two inch poly propylene Hydrogen town gas pipe in a two foot deep ditch (even hand dug) anywhere in the world for the corporation side and one inch for the delivery side for next to nothing and drop the utility up front costs except for the drainage pipes if any and what amounts to burying a garden hose. Hydrogen is made from polluted water in unlimited supply where usable water is scarce. Land is being striped for fire wood and the eroding hillsides in Tibet are causing floods in Bangladesh etc. and potable water, fuel and sewerage disposal is needed by all. Much of the energy used in municipal pumping, dumping and skyfilling is history. Muni-money is tax money _ your treadmill time. The Catch 22 is that you have to have a money economy to pay taxes which eliminates the possibility of the informal economy no. Craftily re-assessing property values taxes the indigenous off their land from farmers in New Hampshire due to adjacent development to those manipulated off their land into Apartheid in So. Africa to gather not only the land but labor for the mines, to the people of Chiapas at the request of the Chase Manhattan bank(remember the memo). Pollution is a moot point when we save two thirds of the life support strokes globally, planned obsolescence is exposed, and the Hydrogen is just water whether it is used for the BTU-Calorie-Joule value or in a fuel cell _ no entropy to boot.
Imagine a group that forms as a community support group on the Internet or a church group or a group of friends or even as we are attempting here on the list, with the idea of creating a model village that is expandable into a city as it matures.
Imagine: A piece of ground becomes available due to the down turn in the meat diet which makes it affordable. Perhaps a group of former farmers will become hosts to self sufficient communities rather than sell to developers who in turn would profiteer and attempt to keep the price of the real estate artificially high.
